"Cabaret," in French, initially referred to a business that served liquor and was a common meeting space of poets, writers, artists and composers to share ideas. By the early 1900s, cabarets sprang up all over Europe, and they began scheduling nightly entertainment. Bringing an intimacy and spirit to audiences, cabarets grew in popularity after World War I when people needed an escape more than ever. 

The overthrow of the kaiser, the revolutionary tumult that resulted in the establishment of a Social-Democratic republic and the hardships of the inflation period were the troubled waters, which cabaret performers could fish with spectacular success. Berlin became a maelstrom, sucking in the energies and talents of the rest of Germany. . . Cabaret, the musical, gives a stylized but essentially accurate view of what cabaret entertainment was like in 1932 Berlin, with satiric sketches, torch songs, transvestitism and more. These shows had an intellectual punch which, with a few drinks, helped audiences push the harsh realities of life aside for a few hours.

The music in Cabaret is truly iconic and the show is still influencing musical theater to this day. Approaching controversial themes and seedy topics with an exaggerated flare, Cabaret does not back down.
